CHAMPS DE MARS, Port-au-Prince, Haiti Champs de Mars is the biggest open space in downtown of Port-au-Prince. It’s home to the National Museum, the site of the former National Palace, black marble monolith dedicated to Toussaint Louverture’s 1801 constitution and a series of monuments marking key moments in Haitian history, all set in a number of parks interested by wide, tree-lined avenues. Given the busy press of people, traffic and building in most of the city, the sudden sense of space comes as a mild, but pleasant, surprise.Champs de mars was parkland used for army parades for much of Port-au-Prince’s history, until it was turned into a racetrack in 1912, with grand wrought-iron viewing stands facing the National Palace. In 1945, it was officially renamed the place des Héros de l’Indépendence. Where we can see Heros statue such as:- Jean Jacques Dessalines - Alexandre Petion - Henry Christophe - Toussaint Louverture - Nèg Mawon (Marron Inconnu)Its current layout is from 1999, when the area was remodeled to celebrate Port-au-Prince’s 250th anniversary. On monument in Champs de Mars stands above all others, a huge squat pyramid in raw concrete. This is the "Bicentenary Monument", ordered by Aristide to celebrate 200 year of Haitian independence, but the 2004 coup meant that is was never finished.——-• Le Paradis Haïtien, through its initiatives, aims to change the way Haitian history is told by highlighting Haitian culture in all its diversity and promoting and encouraging a sustainable and responsible local tourism in Haiti.———..#Repost - @leparadishaitien by @get_regrammer.#leparadishaitien #visithaiti #facesofhaiti #champsdemars #channmas #mupanah #bestsideofhaiti #localtourism #discoverhaiti #westindies #haiti #travelinhaiti #haitian #caribbean #ayiticherie #islandlife #tourism #haitianlife #haitianphotographer #ayiti #haitianpride #haitianculture #haitianhistory #haitianparadise #dekouvriayiti #konnenayiti #vannayiti #ayisyen #shareyourhaiti
